It’s where my family fished for generations since the 1850’s. Where my great grandfather, Jesse, ran his commercial fishing business, dating back to 1926 according to public record. Where my mother and uncle would go as kids in the summers to “help” granddad fish. Where the original cabin, built by hand, still stands to this day.
It was a hard-earned living. During fishing season, operations were seven days a week, sunup to sundown. In winter the steel boats and equipment were repaired and maintained. At winter’s end, the ice would be cut and harvested from the lake, in 300-pound blocks to store fish for shipment to mercantile centers in Chicago and New York.
